This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Maurice Fromkes was born in Vilna, Poland and brought to the US as a small child. He lived and painted in New York and Spain. He is mentioned in Nathan's novel, "Portrait of Jenny," when Jenny's friend says that Fromkes is painting her portrait. He painted many portraits of Spanish life, like the one shown on your web page. He is listed in Spanish texts on painters in Spain. With the demise of the old New York Paramount theater, The New Yorker Talk of the Town, I believe, mentioned a portrait by Fromkes among its art collection. The author wondered who Fromkes was.
