Robert Fabe was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1917, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began the study of painting with his father, a talented amateur. He took art courses at Withrow High School, in Cincinnati (1932-1936) in conjunction with the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Robert entered the Cincinnati Art Academy after graduation (four year scholarship) and studied with Herman Wessel, John E. Weis and Meyer Abel.
