This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography, submitted July 2004, was provided by Shawne MacIntyre independent art and antique appraiser of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Statira Elizabeth Wells Frame, Canadian painter, was born in Quebec in 1870. She migrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, shortly after her marriage in 1892. Largely a self-taught artist who painted in an impressionist-inspired style, Frame was a member of the British Columbia Society of Fine Arts and The Palette and Chisel Club.

She was considered an important participant in the then-burgeoning Vancouver art community and was also a close friend and follower of Emily Carr, who stayed with the Frame family upon her return from France (1912) where she and Frame spent time sketching together.

Frame is known for her use of bright, bold colours and for a "joyous feeling of light, sunshine and colour that was truly beautiful." Frame strayed little from the West, choosing to paint scenes from Vancouver, Victoria, her summer home at Indian Arm and Alert Bay, where she visited in 1926. She spent a short time in California where she received instruction from American painter Armin Hansen (1886-1957).

Following her death in 1935, the Vancouver Art Gallery held a retrospective exhibition of her works. Her paintings are found in the collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and in private homes throughout Canada and the United States.

Quote is from "Emily Carr", catalogue of Memorial Show Paintings, Vancouver Art Gallery, April 17-27, 1936
