This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following information was submitted by his daughter, Victoria Davenport:

Tom Funk was born in Brooklyn in 1911, and attended Amherst College, the Art Students' League and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, New York.  Tom's career included freelance book, magazine and advertising illustration. His work appeared regularly in the New Yorker, the Dramatists Guild Quarterly, Harper's, Woman's Day, Gourmet, House & Garden and Life.  He also illustrated Christmas cards and many children's books.

The Funk & Wagnalls dictionary was founded by his grandfather and great-uncle, and Tom illustrated four books on word derivations (Hog on Ice, Heavens to Betsey!, etc.) He had a characteristic pen-and-ink style of old New York buildings, as well as portraits familiar to readers of the New Yorker.

He was married to fellow-artist Edna Eicke.
