| Born in New York in 1846. By 1880 Francis was working at the mines in Bodie, CA. By the 1890s he had settled in San Francisco. He studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute and was active locally until 1925. While working as an illustrator for the Chronicle, he exhibited locally. His works were used to illustrate the books, The Beginning of San Francisco Bay by S. Eldridge (1912) and Pictorial History of California by Owen C. Coy (1925).
