This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted July 2005, is from the artist.

Alexander Gavalas is known primarily as a landscape painter and works in the classical realist style. The Hudson River countryside and the old villages portrayed by the American Masters of the 19th Century are the subject of his paintings. His paintings in oil on canvas are executed in a variety of scales as are his pen and ink drawings on rag paper. He works with a strict, near photographic accuracy of representation and yet the compositions contain an elusive subjective quality.

Gavalas was born in Limerick, Ireland in 1945, the son of an Irish war bride and an American soldier, and immigrated with the family to America a year later. He began to draw at the age of five when he sketched the UnitedStates House of Congress, and by age eleven, he had discovered oils.

In 1963, he graduated from the school of Art and Design majoring in stage design. In that same year his painting of the " Cloisters " was purchased by J. Walter Thompson, advertising firm founder, after a one-man showing of his work.

Gavalas studies have included anatomy, and he graduated from the Kerpel School of Dental Technology in 1972. He also studied piano at Manhattanville College and organ at the Guilmant Organ School both in New York.

He has taught art and music and is also a graduate of the College of New Rochelle with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in education.
