| | Born in Saginaw, MI in 1877. Galpin came to San Francisco as a youth and studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute. After serving in the Spanish American War and joining the gold rush to Alaska, he worked in the art department of the Chronicle for several years and then served as editor of the Standard Oil Bulletin.
