| Born on a plantation in the bayou country of Louisiana on Aug. 20, 1818. Grayson began drawing birds, animals, and the swamp creatures as a child. He later attended St Mary's College in St Louis, but was forbidden to study art and remained a self-taught artist. In 1846 he headed an emigrant train to California, arriving in the fall of that year amid the furor of the Mexican War during which he served as a recruiter. When gold was discovered in 1848, he acquired a stake and then entered into (showing 500 of 1780 characters). |
