Arnout van Gilst (1898-1982)

Born in The Hague on January 17, 1898, he died in Bennebroek in 1982.  He is mentioned in the Netherlands 'Register of overlijden' in P.A.Scheen's Dictionary of Contemporary Artists.

He was student of the Akademie for Beeldende Arts in The Hague under Jan Springer.  He was also a student of Johan Coenraad Altorf.  As a student of the Academy for Beeldende Art in The Hague he started as a sculptor and after 1923 moved more seriously into painting.  He was quite prolific in painting watercolors through the years as well.

Arnout, also Aarnout, lived and painted until 1937 in The Hague and moved that year to Haarlem.  His scenes depict primarily Dutch interior scenes, landscapes, town - and seascapes, and horses.  Van Gilst painted in a naturalist impressionist style.  Much of its work, especially the landscapes, do strongly lend themselves to that of Cor Noltee.  Van Gilst was a real plein aire painter. The places that he painted always drew a crowd.  Ever kind, he would talk to everyone and encourage them to work on their own art.  He loved a very exact, almost topographical interpretation that the landscape offered.
