Born 1819 in Brownfield, Maine, Augustus Gibson attended Bowdoin College, graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1839, became a Lieutenant Colonel and fought in the Mexican, Seminole and Civil Wars.
He was a soldier in the Mexican and Civil Wars and did watercolors of local Northeast landscapes, of the American West where he was posted, and of various other U.S. locations as he traveled with the Army as an officer.
