PORTRAIT OF A MAN

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Portraitist Bernard Godwin, born in 1900 of Russian ancestry, was a painter of the rich and famous. Hollywood celebrities, scientists, military men and the Pope, sat patiently while his brush described them in conventionally realistic form. Godwin's portraits of Albert Einstein, Generals George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower, and Pope John XXIII may be found in sites as diverse as the Vatican, West Point and Presidential Libraries.

His career as a portrait painter had begun to take off with commissions in the 1930s from wealthy Newport, Rhode Island families. He lived in a style reflective of his financial success, and traveled widely around the world in pursuit and fulfillment of portrait commissions.

As a young man, like other artists influenced by their parents, Godwin, at his mother's suggestion, had initially gone into dentistry, not art, at the University of Pennsylvania. It wasn't until his latter 20s that he studied painting, in the traditional style, in Brussels, Belgium.

Bernard Godwin died in 1967 after a long and successful career as a society portraitist.
