Born in Philadelphia, Bessie Gutmann was a painter of infant children during the first half of the 20th century and achieved much public attention for this subject, but her reputation faded after World War II.
She studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the Chase School of Art, later called the New York School. From 1905 to 1920, she created several hundred pictures of infants, and they were reproduced as photolithographic prints. "She hit a sentimental chord with the m (showing 500 of 768 characters). |
