This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Stockton, CA on April 4, 1855. Grunsky was the nephew of artist Eugene Camerer. A painting of Stockton in 1849, done originally by J. P. Cressy, was copied by Grunsky before the turn of the century and reproduced in the Society of California Pioneers Quarterly (vol. X). His watercolors of Sutter's Fort (1890 and 1892), are held in the California State Library and Society of California Pioneers. While city engineer for San Francisco (1900-04), his surveys for the Hetch-Hetchy Dam gained him national attention; Theodore Roosevelt then appointed him to the Panama Canal Commission. During his later years he devoted himself to the California Academy of Sciences. He died on June 9, 1934 in Berkeley, CA.
