| | Born in Michigan of French descent in 1878. Gardelle studied in Paris at Académie Colarossi. Leaving Michigan, by 1920 he had settled in Los Angeles and was fulfilling sculpture commissions. Having adopted a baby girl in 1902, his subsequent marriage to his daughter, Mildred, caused a sensation in Los Angeles in 1923.
