Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Marine painter. Born in Oswego, NY on Feb. 6, 1866. Artistically inclined at an early age, Grant painted his first seascape when he was eight.  His art training began at the National Academy of Design in his early teens and continued in the studios of Seymour J. Guy and M. F. H. DeHaas.

The desire to paint the Pacific Ocean brought him to California in 1912.  He elected to remain and was a resident of San Francisco for the rest of his life.  An ardent sailor, he was familiar with almost all ocean-going craft, and by 1925 his reputation as a ship and marine painter was such that he was made the official artist of the U.S. Navy on its visit to Australia.

Grant was active as an artist and maintained a studio at 1350 Franklin Street until his death there on Jan. 21, 1939.

Exhibitions:
Bohemian Club and San Francisco Art Association annuals; Panama Pacific Exposition, 1915; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939.

Collections:
Bohemian Club, Sequoia Club, De Young Museum, Society of California Pioneers (all in SF); Bancroft Library (UC Berkeley); Syracuse (NY) Museum; Oswego City Hall.

AAA 1919-33; WWA 1928; WWC 1928; WWAA 1936-39; CAR; SF Chronicle and NY Times, 1-23-1939 (obits).
