This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted September 2004, is from Margaret Reed Gardner, grand daughter of the artist. Charles Reed Gardner was born and raised on Carlisle Street in North Philadelphia, PA along with six brothers and sisters. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts and went on to participate in the WPA. After marrying Alice R. Grosch of Lititz, PA, and starting his own family, he moved from Carlisle Street to a home whose main structure was built in 1812, but the area he used as a studio was built in 1741. It was located on a spot along the Perkiomen River canal path below Green Lane Park.
He carried on his career as an illustrator and artist at their home in Salford, Montgomery County, PA. He also taught art lessons out of the studio, next to the Perkiomen River. Much of his work reflects landscape scenes of the area including the banks of the Perkiomen and the local quarry. Cape Cod beaches also figured largely in his work.
The support of his loving wife who held the position of Head OR Nurse at Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia allowed for the continuation of his work up until his death in July of 1974. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A designer of book covers and magazines, engraver and painter, Charles Gardner Reed studied in Philadelphia with Thornton Oakley and Herbert Pullinger. He was a member of the Philadelphia Print Club and the Philadelphia Sketch Club.
