Biography from Jim's Of Lambertville:
Chester Alan Gash was born in New York City in 1906.  A successful restaurateur and designer, Gash owned several New York restaurants, including Tim’s Restaurant and part ownership of the Virginia Forbes Restaurant.  He designed both establishments. Gash also owned a farm in Stockton, New Jersey, several miles up river from New Hope.  There, he would often escape the hustle and bustle of the city to spend time on his painting.

Gash began his art studies in Paris and then Lausanne, Switzerland, in the early 1930s. He exhibited at Midtown Galleries in New York in 1933, and in New Hope, with the newly formed group of modernist painters called the Independents, in 1934 at the Pickett Galleries.

Although there is little information known about Chester Gash, from the mid-1930s to the end of his life, he devoted himself to art.  He was the organizer and member of various art organizations.  His life ended prematurely at the age of forty-nine from injuries suffered when he was struck by a police car in New York City.
