This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Eleanor Gilpatrick is a second-career, realist painter working primarily with landscapes and the figure. Although she won prizes for painting and draftsmanship (study with Abby Ostrowsky at the Educational Alliance), when she was young, she chose to study the social sciences in college and graduate school, and eventually became an expert in health care policy and human resources issues. While a professor at Hunter College, CUNY, she authored four books, directed a masters program in health services administration, and pioneered courses in critical thinking and writing.

Gilpatrick picked up the thread of drawing and painting in 1998 in a plein-air workshop in Italy and returned to serious study with renewed intensity. She studied at Hunter College with Gabriele Evertz, Valerie Jaudon, Juan Sanchez, Susan Crile, and Bob Swain, and with Carmen Miguel and Tom Carr at the Escola D'Arts Appicades I D'Oficis Artistas (LLOTJA), Barcelona, Spain. Now, Professor Emerita at Hunter College, painting independently, Bob Swain and Gabriele Evertz remain her mentors.

Gilpatrick paints strong, romantic landscapes set in New York and Europe. Her most recent landscapes are filled with sky in all its dramatic lights. These are descendents of the Hudson River School, often showing the Hudson River, but now with urban references in the foreground. The work with the figure looks at people in motion at a moment in time, absorbed in the activity of their lives.

A triptych dealing with Hunter College students is on loan to Hunter College. Gilpatrick has shown in juried shows including the Galleria D'Arte Mentana in Florence, Italy, the Marymount Manhattan College Gallery, the Cork Gallery in Lincoln Center, the first annual nonmember show at the Pen and Brush Gallery in New York, and the Stage Gallery in Merrick, New York.

She has exhibited with the West Side Arts Coalition in New York City, the gallery of the Manhattan Borough President, The Times Square Lobby Gallery in New York.

A profile of Gilpatrick's figural work and the development of her palette
appeared in "American Artist" Magazine in November 2002.

Her first solo show was from May 8 - 29, 2003, at the Jadite Galleries in Manhattan. Gilpatrick was accepted for the juried show, First Hudson River Art at Rhinebeck, July 26, 2003.
