|  Known for landscape and seascape painting, Elwyn Gowen was born in Maine to Ernest Littlefield Gowen and Georgia May Hale Gowen. He studied with Charles Woodbury at his summer school in Ogunquit, Maine. Later Gowen taught at the school. In 1935, he taught in the Woodbury and Boston school systems and also at the Museum School in Boston and the Attleboro, Maine Museum of Art. That same year, he married Annette Goodwin.
