| Ethan Allen Greenwood painted portraits as a second occupation, while in 1812 he was teaching school and studied law at Dartmouth College. He began painting in 1801 and received some instruction from Edward Savage in New York City in 1806. In June 1812 he opened a studio in Boston where he painted many portraits, in 1818 he also took over Savage's Museum. After his father's death in 1827 Greenwood returned to Hubbardstown and later entered politics.
