Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, she left there to live with her father, Henry Fish, on a Kansas sheep ranch where she was raised on land that bordered the wild territory where Indians, wolves, and coyotes roamed the plains.
Her father, with little education but with blue-blood ties to the Stuyvesants of New York state, had a library with many books about sheep, and she was fascinated by these animals and drew pictures all over the margins.
