Evangeline Fanton was known for opaque watercolor landscapes of San Diego, still lifes, and Mexican scenes. Later in her career she did collages and monotypes.

She was born in San Diego, California and remained a resident of her native city for her entire life. Her father, Luther Fanton, was also an artist.

In the 1920's Evangeline Fanton married Byron Gilchrist.

She was an award-winning artist who studied at Pamona College and San Diego State University. She improved her skill by studying under Millard Sheets and George Post and exhibited at the San Diego Fine Art Gallery.

Gilchrist died in San Diego in 1986.

Evangeline Fanton Gilchrist was born in San Diego, California on May 22, 1899. She was the daughter of Luther Fanton, a sculptor who assisted on the development of Mount Rushmore.

Evangeline married Byron Gilchrist in the early 1920’s. She was educated at Pomona College and San Diego State University. She studied under Dong Kingman, George Post, Rex Brandt and Millard Sheets. Her work includes opaque watercolors and pastels of San Diego, Mexican Coastal communities, and still life works.

She exhibited widely in Southern California. She was an award winner in many venues in which she exhibited. She exhibited at the San Diego Fine Art Society (now the San Diego Museum of Art), the Southern California Exposition at the Del Mar Fair, the La Jolla Art Center, and the California Watercolor Society. Gilchrist was a member of the San Diego Fine Art Society, San Diego Artists Guild, La Jolla Art Association, and California Watercolor Society. She is a Past President of the San Diego Artist’s Guild.

Gilchrist was a lifelong resident of her native city (San Diego). She died there on July 20, 1986.
