| | Born in Long Island, NY on July 17, 1815. Gibbs obtained a law degree from Harvard and then was a librarian for the New York Historical Society from 1842-48. He came to northern California as a journalist with the Redick McKee expedition which explored the Humboldt Bay region in 1851. While there, he sketched the local Indians and scenes of the Bay. His sketches may be seen in Drawn From Life (1977). Gibbs died in New Haven, CT on April 9, 1873.
