Grace Marie Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 12, 1904. After high school Miss Green attended the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. She later enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Chester Springs Campus in 1929. The following year she attended the Academy's Philadelphia school where she was the recipient of two prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarships in 1931 and 1932.
