This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Italy, he became a much recognized mural and fresco painter in the United States from 1857.  Having decorated palaces in Milan, Rome, Verona, and Vienna, he had numerous private commissions including locations in Buffalo, New York City, Syracuse, Milwaukee, Albany, and San Francisco.  In New York he did mural decoration for the Grand Opera House and the office building of the New York Tribune.

In 1875, he went to San Francisco where he had a studio in the old Supreme Court House near Julian Rix, Jules Tavernier, and Elizabeth Strong.  He was regarded as quite a character because he dressed as a Grand Duke and drove around Nob Hill in a carriage getting mural contracts for the mansions and then getting his friends including Tavernier to fill the orders.  At first he worked with Virgillio Tojetti, but they became rivals and their friendship dissolved.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Italy on June 18, 1840, Garibaldi was well known in his native land for his frescoes. In 1875 he was brought to San Francisco to execute several local commissions, including a mural in the Mark Hopkins residence.  Dressed as a grand duke, he was an elegant figure in his hired carriage as he made his way about Nob Hill.  Virgilio Tojetti acted as his assistant in painting scenes in the Baldwin Academy; however, rivalry later erupted between the Tojettis and Garibaldi.  Most of these murals were destroyed in the 1906 disaster.

He died in San Francisco on April 19, 1918.
