This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in London, England, Henry Gitten was a painter known especially for landscapes, which he exhibited in London galleries between 1835 and 1849.  By 1850, he was in the United States, living in Brooklyn.  The next year he exhibited at the American Art Union, and from 1850 to 1854, he entered paintings at the National Academy of Design annual exhibitions.  He also went to New Hampshire, where he painted in the White Mountains:  Kearsarge Mountain (1850 and Recollection of New Hampshire Scenery (1851).

By 1853, he was in Australia, hoping to make a fortune mining gold, but failing to do so, he returned to easel painting and earned a distinguished reputation in Australia as an artist.  Among his oil and watercolor paintings are scenes of Melbourne including from the south bank of the Yarra River and from the Botanical Gardens.

In 1864, he exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, which has one of his landscapes in its collection.  In 1870, three years before his death, he became a founding member of the Victorian Academy of Arts.
