| | Born in Minnesota on Sept. 8, 1884. Gutterson studied in San Francisco at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in 1897-99. He then studied architecture at the University of California in Berkeley under John Galen Howard. Upon graduation in 1906, he continued his studies in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts for two years. By 1909 he was a well-known San Francisco architect and designed many of the important Beaux-Arts buildings in the City as it was recovering from the earthquake of 1906. He taught architecture at UC Berkeley in 1910 and 1920, and in 1929 he was elected to the State Board of Architectural Examiners. During the 1930s he painted on the Monterey Peninsula.
