This biography from the Archives of AskART:

A note from the artist's daughter, Briane Gantt Lawler:

Many reference books have my father’s birth year as 1909, though he was actually born in 1911.  My mother had explained that because my father left home early in his life, he really did not know the year of his birth until he requested a copy of his birth certificate many years later.

He was going to create a series of murals for the Kansas City, Kansas City Hall auditorium and though there was much publicity (accompanied by images of my father’s drawings) printed in the Kansas City Star newspaper, the murals in the end never materialized.

A local historian speculated the reason for this was because the political party in power objected to the labor images included in the murals.

Sources:
birth certificate
newspaper clippings and cartoons about the planned murals.

Exhibition Record (Museums, Institutions and Awards):
Kansas Free Fair Art Exhibition, 1936; Midwestern Artists Exhibition, 1938.
