An itinerant portrait and miniature painter and silhouetist, James Guild worked in many places including New York City where he took up silhouette cutting as well as portrait and miniature painting.  Pursuing these talents, he also worked in Boston, Norfolk, Baltimore and Charleston.

He left his home in Halifax, Vermont in 1818, and earned money "as a peddler and jack-of-all-trades."  In 1825, he  went to England, and reportedly earned medals for exhibitions in Europe.  (showing 500 of 713 characters).
