A painter and teacher, James Green was born in Ware, Massachusetts and lived in Hollywood, California and then Elsah, Illinois where he was an art professor from 1941 to 1976 at Principia College. Upon retirement, he remained in Elsah.
He studied at the Massachusetts School of Art, and at the University of Vermont with Barse Miller and at the Otis Art Institute with Paul Clemens. He was a member of the California Watercolor Society.
