Johannes Sophus Gelert   (1852-1923)

Born in Schleswig, Germany.  Apprenticed to a wood carver at Copenhagen in 1866, and in 1870 entered the Royal Academy of Fine Art, Completing his studies in 1875.  Exhibited in the Salon of 1878. Came to the United States and became a citizen in 1887.  Exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition, 1893.  Awarded a Gold Medal at the Nashville Centennial Exposition, 1897.  In 1900 he lived in New York City.  < (showing 500 of 782 characters).
