| Born in Houston, Texas, Joseph Gerges is a painter of human figures,
primarily male, in single and group poses that he describes as iconic, that is
suggestive of attitude. His goal is to create figures that
convey "humanity and emotion" (89) but not specific time or place. He is fascinated that one
simple image can tell story far beyond the moment. Many of his ideas come from
looking at periodicals such as Time magazine. The figures
