Jules Guerin received his early schooling in St. Louis. When old enough to begin to pursue a career he decided to become a civil engineer and entered Washington University. He left the school late in 1880 to go to Chicago after deciding his interests lay in art.

His first job in Chicago was as a painter of theater scenery. He then entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while continuing his scenery painting job for the next ten years. In 1887 he received a commission to do boo (showing 500 of 3565 characters).
