This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Lawrence Gipe was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 and lives in Santa Barbara, California. He began his career in Los Angeles with a series of exhibitions addressing the themes of industrialization and progress. These shows, filled with large-scaled paintings of factories and steaming locomotives, led to solo exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Chigago as well as Munich, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, and Berlin.

Gipe's work is collected by individuals and institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. A traveling mid-career survey, "3 Five-Year Plans: Lawrence Gipe 1990-2005", is currently being organized by Marilyn Zeitlin at the University Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona.

Last November, Gipe had his 9th solo exhibition in New York. He recently completed a mural commission for the lobby of the Federal Reserve Bank Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia in a building designed by Robert A.A. Stern. Currently, he teaches art studio (painting and drawing) and the History of 20th Century Art at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He writes frequently about art as a regular columnist for the Santa Barbara Independent.

Articles and reviews of Gipe's works have appeared in Kunstforum, The New York Times Magazine, Art and Antiques, L.A. Weekly, Architectural Digest, Elle, The Los Angeles Times, Talk, ArtForum, ArtNews, Art in America, Flash Art, Santa Barbara News Press, Vanity Fair, Village Voice, Bomb and many others.

He has received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts: an NEA for Painting in 1989 and for Works on Paper in 1995.
