| Born in Riga, Latvia on July 25, 1907. Gilmour came to the U.S. in 1916 and grew up in Boston where he studied at the School of Practical Art. He then made his way to the West Coast and, along the way, worked as a ranch hand, gold miner and truck driver. Much of his later subject matter was derived from these experiences. After his long journey, he arrived in Los Angeles and studied at the Otis Art Institute in the late 1920s. He was introduced to wood engraving by Paul Landacre in 1931.
