This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Riga, Latvia on July 25, 1907. Gilmour came to the U.S. in 1916 and grew up in Boston where he studied at the School of Practical Art. He then made his way to the West Coast and, along the way, worked as a ranch hand, gold miner and truck driver. Much of his later subject matter was derived from these experiences. After his long journey, he arrived in Los Angeles and studied at the Otis Art Institute in the late 1920s. He was introduced to wood engraving by Paul Landacre in 1931. He then taught at USC and became successful as a designer and illustrator. In 1951 he moved to the San Francisco Bay area to act as art director for the Crocker Lithography Company. Gilmour made his home in Burlingame, CA until his demise on March 31, 1996. Exh: American Artists Congress (LA), 1936. In: Smithsonian Inst.; CPLH; Boston Public Library; MM; San Jose Museum; Pratt Inst.; San Mateo Co. and San Fernando Valley Historical Museums; Library of Congress.
