This biography from the Archives of AskART:

LeRoy Greene was born in Dover, New Jersey in 1893, born the son of a painter. In 1911 he went to Florida, then to Eastern Montana where he worked in construction. Next he operated his own business in sculptured jewelry in Billings, Montana, which provided him the necessary funds, he saved to study art.

Greene apprenticed with Roscoe Shrader and Edouart Vysekal in Los Angeles, with portrait painter Wayman Adams, and with George Elmer Browne. Next Greene built a studio in Billings. From 1933 to 1943 he taught art there. He was noted for traveling widely and painted "landscapes from Mexico to Massachusetts and Banff in Canada to New Mexico."

By 1946 he was able to build a mountain studio in the Beartooth Range at East Rosebud Lake in Montana. He was noted for painting in the field. His style was to record the impression of what he saw, adding the detail in later at his studio. Today his portraits and landscape paintings are held in many institutions and private collections throughout the United States. LeRoy Greene's wife still lives in Montana and is 99 years old at the turn of the century.
