This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Dublin, Ireland in September 1894. Gibney studied in London with Sir William Orpen. He immigrated to California in 1910 and settled in San Francisco in 1930, following a stint at sea and jobs as a laborer in Hollywood. After establishing a studio in the “Monkey Block” (now the Transamerica Pyramid), he painted many portraits as well as seascapes while working as a bartender at Vesuvio's. Greatly influenced by the Old Masters, he tended to paint in the darker tones. His portraits are distinguished by his treatment of the deep, spiritual eyes similar to those of El Greco. Gibney died in San Francisco on Nov. 7, 1960. Exh: SFAA, 1939; SFMA, 1946; LACMA; Rockefeller Center. In: Bakersfield College.
