This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Lynn L. Gertenbach is a California impressionist landscape painter of places near her home by Malibu State Park, near Los Angeles.

Gertenbach grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and during high school lived in Denver, Colorado.  She received a commercial art degree from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1960 in Denver.  She was tutored by John Jellico, the school's founder who nominated her in 1996 for the Institute's Hall of Fame.

After graduation, she became a fashion illustrator while attending night classes at the Layton School of Art.   She also studied fine-art painting with Phil Gilkerson and Sergei Bongart, and of Bongart, said "the Russian way of handling both portraits and landscapes, as well as the bravura of brushwork, felt right for me." (Belfor, 53)

Living in Laguna Beach, she met the watercolorist Arul Raj, and at his invitation, she traveled in India with him, his wife and daughter and did plein-air painting.  This was the first of five trips around the world with that family, all of whom were artists.  From these trips, she filled her notebooks with many sketches, which served her well in future studio works.  Included in these travels was Peru, where she did Amazon Jungle scenes and Machu Picchu.

The first trip to India led to an exhibition in Bombay of her work and that of the Raj family followed by exhibitions at the Brand Library Museum and the Laguna Beach Festival of the Masters.  She also studied Indian music with Ravi Shankar, famous for his mastery of the sitar, and she painted several portraits of him that were used on four of his albums.  In addition she did a portrait of Zubin Mehta, which hangs in the halls of the Montreal Symphony.

In 1986, Lynn Gertenbach became a founding member of the Plein-Air Painters of America, then newly organized.  Since then she has been in every one of their yearly exhibitions and also teaches workshops for them.

She finds plein-air painting exhilarating and quickening to her senses.

Carl B. Belfor, "Lynn Gertenbach", Fine Art Connoisseur, May 2006, pp. 52-55

Biography from Ella Walton Richardson Fine Art:
Lynn Gertenbach paints oil paintings depicting subject matters ranging from landscapes to figures.  According to Patricia Saleh in an article for International Fine Art Collector, “ To find the source of Lynn’s artistic charisma, one must enter the realm of imagination, as first and foremost she is an adventuress, inside and out.”

Gertenbach has traveled around the world five times to paint and exhibit.  She recently returned from a trip to Mongolia and Northern China to paint with artist Jove Wang.  They traversed rugged terrain and slept in primitive tents in her quest to capture, on canvas, the natural beauty of the region.

In 1980, The Instituto Cultural Norte Americano sponsored a traveling exhibition of Gertembach's paintings to three cities in Peru.  Additionally, she is preparing for her twelfth trip to Japan where her works will be shown at her biannual show in Osaka, Naro and Kyoto.  In the spring of 2002, she will be leading a workshop in Provence, France.

Born in Wisconsin and partially educated in Denver, Colorado, Gertenbach was able to attain scholarships enabling her to graduate from the Colorado Institute of Art.  She continued her studies at Layton Art Institute in Milwaukee, The Art Center in Los Angeles, California, UCLA, and with painters Sergei Bongart, Phillip Gilkerson, Bernard Dustan and Arul Raj.

Gertenbach's public and private commissions include works for Maestro Rubin Math, the Maharaja of Navanagar, Maestro Ravi Shankar, Tippi Hedren, Maestro Zubin (conductor for the New York philharmonic), Huntley House Hotel in Santa Monica, California, Mrs. Vince Scully, Northrop Aircraft Murals, Hugh Brady, TRW, and Southern California Gas Company Murals.

She received the Life Achievement Award (Hall of Fame Inductee) from the Colorado Institute of Art and her work has been in group exhibitions in the Laguna Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum, the Pacific Asia Museum and the Isetan Museum in Tokyo.

She is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club and the Plein Air Painters of America
