This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Mauro Gandolfi was known for his meticulous drawings, which were copies of Old Master paintings and often used for engravings.  He also did paintings, many which were  of nude male figures and of male heads.

Gandolfi was born in Bologna and traveled away from Italy to France in 1780 for five years, going to Marseilles, Strasburg and Paris.  In 1785, he returned to Bologna, and in 1785, was elected professor at the Accademia Clementina.

Sixteen years later, in 1801, he returned to Paris, having been invited there by Pierre Laurent and Robillard Peronville to make drawings for etchings from major works in the Louvre.  He also worked for the Galerie Talleyrand, restoring several of their paintings.

In 1816, Gandolfi went to Washington DC, and made an engraving from John Trumbull's painting, Signers of the Declaration of Independence.   However, the United States Congress would not pay the price asked by Gandolfi, so he abandoned the project and returned to Italy, living in Bologna and Florence where he made etchings after important Old Master works.  He also worked at the Vatican, copying from frescoes by Raphael.

He died in Bologna in 1834..

Work by Gandolfi include drawings of Judith with the Head of Holofernes,"formerly with Kunsthandel Bellinger in Munich in 1987, which was a copy after Cristofano Allori and was the preparatory for the large engraving for the Musee Napoleon.  Another equally meticulous drawing is The Kneeling Saint Peter and An Allegory of Painting and Architecture.  Also, the Portrait of Gaetano Gandolfi from the Pinacoteca di Bologna (inv.no.3832), the St. Benedetto Receiving gifts from the Farmers in a private collection, and the Parents with a Child formerly with Sotheby’s in 1980 and the Last Communion of Saint Jerome, which was a copy after Domenichino’s famous painting."
