She was born July 19, 1885 in Jane Lew, West Virginia and died October 23, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois.

Gilruth graduated Ohio Wesleyan in 1909 and later attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

She painted in watercolor and oil and produced serigraphs.
