Peter Goll was born in 1947 in New York. He studied at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Art, the University of Washington, the University of Florida, Syracuse University and Cornell University.

His most important training was with Robert Beverly Hale (anatomy and Renaissance drawing theory) at the Art Students League, and with Kenneth Kerslake (etching and photo-intaglio) at the University of Florida. He served as assistant to Hale and Kerslake in their classes.

Goll has been an established artist, living in Alaska, for 30 years. His first New York shows were at the Dry Dock Savings Bank in 1978 and the Gallery Madison 90 in 1979. He had a one man show at Mansfield College in 1975. His first Alaska one-man shows were at Faces, Places and Things in Juneau in 1975 and Street Gallery in Ketchikan in 1981.

During the 1970's he produced drawings and etchings, which were exhibited in
galleries throughout Alaska, and in Seattle and New York. He participated in juried shows including the Alaska Juried Art Show.

From 1983-1991, he served in the Alaska House of Representatives.

He concentrates on portraits, the development of digital graphics and figure studies. He has contributed to many exhibits for charitable and non-profit causes. He draws and paint landscapes while traveling.

Goll is represented in various public and private collections including those of the Alaska State Museum, Cornell University, the United States Department of State, Sheldon Museum, the American Embassies, Mansfield College the New York Public Library and others. His early exhibitions included his abstract work and bird drawings. These were often featured in the 1970's Southeast journal, "The Archipelago", and in the "Living Bird", the journal of Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology.

His art and designs have been used to promote various issues and products from protection of the Chilkat eagles and subsistence rights to motorcycle touring companies, political candidates and public policy initiatives.

Peter and his wife Sherrie lived in Glacier Bay for several months in 1975 and again in 1976, making drawings and etchings aboard his troller-turned-studio.

In 1977 Goll established an open access print studio at Chilkat Press in the Barracks of Fort Seward, the first Army fort in Alaska, located in Haines. In 1981, fire destroyed one of the Barracks buildings and the print shop with it. The loss of the historic building was particularly unfortunate for Haines artists, as the shop was becoming an active print atelier.

In the winter of 1976, Goll instructed students and studied etching and photoetching techniques in the studio of Kenneth Kerslake at the University of Florida at Gainesville. While there, he participated in juried shows and exhibitions.

In 1977, Peter met Robert Beverly Hale who provided him with the intellectual tools needed to gain control over drawing problems that Goll, like most modern artists had heretofore addressed through trial and error.

At the time, Hale was considered by many to be the foremost teacher of Renaissance drawing theory and anatomy in America with a teaching lineage dating back to Titian. His lectures at the Art Students' League were world famous. Peter worked with Hale for parts of three years, documenting his work in detail and serving as his class assistant.

He taught Anatomy and Renaissance Drawing theory for the University of Alaska in 1979, 1980 and1991 and for private and non-profit groups later.

His artwork after 1979 reflected a more comprehensive theoretical knowledge of light and the rationalization of sight. His earlier etchings had been influenced by Japanese woodcut prints and the Impressionist interest in abstract pattern on the picture surface.

In 1980, Goll published On Perspective, a treatment of perspective theory and practice based upon the work of Robert Hale and Peter Hopkins. It received a positive review by the Art Students League journal. He is working on an online version of the book.

In 1982, Peter was elected to the State Legislature. He served for eight years. Several of his etchings were used for campaign posters in the first election. During his legislative years, he ceased to be active in galleries or exhibitions. He continued however to explore drawing and painting, concentrating on portraits and figures, depicting friends, homeless people, politicians, community leaders, and people in the news.

His current approach to oil portraiture dates from 1996. Almost all of his portrait oils are from life. His experimental digital work, animated and static, mostly based upon his hand rendered art, is keeping pace with national trends. In the future, as technology provides him with a higher-resolution digital environment, he expects to be exhibiting on digital wall displays.
