This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Raymond Michael Grant III (R. Grant) was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 9, 1962. At the age of eleven, he was quickly recognized by his art teacher, Donna McManus, as an art prodigy. At thirteen, he attended the Pratt
Institute in Brooklyn, where he was one of the youngest artist/scholars to have enrolled.

He stopped painting and drawing all together when he was seventeen to join the U.S. Marine Corps just to get out of Brooklyn. It was almost four years before he would have the desire to paint again. While stationed in Hawaii, he married a local girl, with whom he had four children.

There he started painting and drawing again, and working with his
brother-in-law, an accomplished artist, created surfing and canoeing scenes in oil and acrylic.

His forte is island landscapes, especially sunsets. He now resides in Georgetown, South Carolina, where his work has been exhibited at the Georgetown County Library. On January 5, 2001, the local newspaper, The Georgetown Times, had an article about Grant's winning a scholarship in a nationwide contest sponsored by Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The scholarship offers training in the Fundamentals of Art including drawing, perspective, design, cartooning, etc.
