Richard Atherstone Genders was born in London, England. As a child he moved with his parents to Indianapolis, where he attended the John Herron Art School* of Indiana University. After graduation he joined the United States Navy in 1942 and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. 

One of eleven Official U.S. Navy Combat Artists*, he painted navel scenes and men in action.  He retired in 1975 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Genders exhibited in juried art shows and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. He was also an author and weekly columnist for the Asheville Citizen-Times (NC), past president of Tidewater Art Association (VA) and member of the Salmagundi Club in New York. 

Genders and wife Nancy resided in their mountain studio-home on Barkers Creek near Sylva, NC.
