This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Francisco, CA on Jan. 22, 1906. Richard was the third-generation president of S&G Gump, a company started by his grandfather in 1861. From Stanford University, he studied at the CSFA under Spencer Macky, Arnold Blanch, and Otis Oldfield. During the 1950s he studied painting with Richard Yip who brightened his palette greatly. A man of many talents, Gump was also an interior designer, musician, composer, and author of Good Taste Costs No More. His watercolors, charcoal and pencil drawings are mostly landscapes and seascapes of his world travels. He often signed them with his pseudonyms G. Ricardo and M. Guckenheimer. A resident of his native city until 1974, he died in Paris, France on Sept. 4, 1989. Member: Nat'l Society of Interior Designers; The Family (SF). Exh: Gump's (SF), 1961; Phoenix Museum, 1962; Maxwell Gallery (SF), 1965.
