| A painter and teacher, Robert Gates was head of the Art Department at American University in Washington DC and lived in McLean, Virginia. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and studied at the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and the Art Students League in New York. Bio/Historical Note Painter, instructor; Washington, D.C. Gates taught in the art department at American University from 1946-1976, serving as chair from 1953-1957. He also taught at the Phillips Memorial Gallery (now Collection) art school.
Biographical material includes awards and certificates, resumes, artists' statements, and a brief biography written by Duncan Phillips. Letters are from Alice Acheson (Mrs. Dean Acheson), Ludwig Bemelmans, Charles Burchfield, Olin Dows, Jennie Lee Knight, Henry Varnum Poor, Edward B. Rowan, Prentiss Taylor, and others. Works of art consist of sketches by Gates, 23 prints by Joe Goethe and one by D. Neufeld, and original Christmas cards by Alida Conover, Enrico Gilcenstein, Avery Johnson, Elizabeth Roberts, 5 by Prentiss Taylor, Joseph Tucker, and others. Photographs are of Gates, his first wife, Margaret Casey Gates, his second wife, Sarita W. Gates, his models, his travels, including a trip to Charleston, S. C., 1934, and to the Virgin Islands, 1936, to paint watercolors for the Section of Fine Arts, and his art works.
Printed material includes two scrapbooks of clippings and exhibition catalogs, 1932-1938, and additional loose items. Also included are project files regarding his work as a civilian technician for the Navy Departments' Photo Surfaced Models Unit, 1942-1945, and his trip to Iraq under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State, 1967.
