| Born in Essex County, VA on Dec. 16, 1819. A West Point graduate, Major Garnett was stationed in Monterey during the Constitutional Convention in 1849. At that time he was the original designer of the Great Seal of California. Due to political involvements, the major did not take credit for the design but allowed a clerk, Caleb Lyon, to copy it and present it to the committee. Modifications were made on the seal by Hugo Arthur Nahl and it was finally accepted in 1858. The seal was engraved (showing 500 of 906 characters). |
