Abstract Color Field painter Sam Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1933, growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he received an MA in painting at the University of Louisville in 1961. He received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the University of Louisville in 1980 and Northwestern University in 1990.
Gilliam came to Washington, D.C. in 1962 to join the second generation of Washington Color Painters. Like the first generation of the group, which included Morris Louis (showing 500 of 5331 characters). |
