This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Sidney Alexander Gordin was born in Chilyabinsk, Russia on Oct. 24, 1918.  At age four Gordin moved to NYC.  He studied at Brooklyn Technical High School and continued at Cooper Union under Morris Kantor and Leo Katz.  In 1958 he accepted a position in the art department at UC Berkeley and taught there until retirment in 1986.  In 1993 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Design.  He died in Berkeley, CA on Jan. 29, 1996.
