Excerpts from: Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph newspaper article 9/22/1969

.........A one-man show of painting by Sidney Guberman has been placed on view in the Owen Gallery in Larimer Square in Denver (CO). Guberman, originally from Colorado Springs, is now active in Philadelphia and came to Denver for the opening of the show this past weekend.

Guberman was an architect for a while after graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, trying painting at night, but then turned to painting.

Guberman, 33, says that his paintings represent nothing but themselves. He says they are not abstractions, but canvases with angles and line and color giving impressions of advancing or receding space.

His Air, he says, is to create a felling of space through means of blacks and bands of colors. He says he sees similarities between painting and writing, in regard to mood, design and rhythm.

In his youth, Guberman was given instruction by Colorado Springs artist, Lew Tilley. In 1948 Guberman began to study drawing and painting with Jean Charlot at the Fountain Valley School. From there he went to Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1954 with the John Larking scholarship first prize award. He studied painting with Stephen Greene at Princeton, graduating in 1958, then took his advanced degree at the University of Pennsylvania, after which he entered the field of Architecture, to leave it for the field of painting.

In 1968, he participated in group shows at the Vanderlip Gallery and Fleischer Art Memorial in Philadelphia. Scheduled for the coming season are one-man shows by Guberman in New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington, DC. Paintings by Guberman are also currently on exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery and the National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington DC.
