Thomas Frederick Goodall (1855-1944)

Born at Anerley, Surrey in 1855, son of John Goodall, civil service clerk in education and an author, and his wife Frances Anne née Davison, who married at Lambeth in 1853.  In 1871 a 14 year old student living at Rydal Cottage, Elm Road, Camberwell with his parents, 46 year old John and 40 year old Frances and two sibling, 16 year old Martin and 11 month old Arthur, they also had a 7 year old daughter Lucy.  Studied art under John Sparkes at City & Guilds Art School, Lambeth and in 1881 a 24 year old artist painter still living with his parents in Elm Road.

A landscape, coastal and rustic genre painter and a member of the New English Art Club in 1886.  He married at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1886, Nancy Bessey and moved to Waveney Terrace, Victoria Road, Carlton Colville, Suffolk where he was living in 1901 with his widowed father, his 38 year old wife Nancy, born Winterton, Norfolk and their four children, Mable 17, Lucy 16, John 14 and Nora 11, born at various villages on the Norfolk Broads.  He collaborated with photographer Peter Henry Emmerson (1856-1936) in the publication of Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads (London 1886) and exhibited at Birmingham Royal Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery, Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Liverpool Walker Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, New English Art Club, Royal Institute of British Painters, New Gallery and the Royal Academy 1879-1901, from Dulwich in 1880 and from Oulton Broad, Lowestoft in 1899.

In 1911 he was living on the ‘Dulce Domum’ a yacht on Oulton Broad, Suffolk with his wife Nancy.  Nancy died at Chelmsford, Essex in 1942, aged 83 and Thomas followed in 1944, aged 87.
